Lung injury related to extreme environments.

چکیده
Hydrostatic lung injuries The evolution of fish to amphibians, reptiles to endothermic birds and mammals has been accompanied by a progressively thinner pulmonary blood gas barrier, to accommodate the constraint of increased oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide output [1]. Accordingly, pulmonary circulation has evolved as a separate high flow–low pressure system. In humans, mean pulmonary artery pressures (PAP) are 8–20 mmHg, pulmonary wedge pressures are 5–14 mmHg and pulmonary capillary pressures are 8–12 mmHg [2]. A low-pressure regimen preserves the integrity of an alveolar capillary membrane only 0.3 mm thick. However, this structure is vulnerable to increased pressures during strenuous exercise or environmental hypoxic exposure as a cause of stress failure of the pulmonary capillaries and accumulation of extravascular lung water [3]. Reports of lung injury related to extremes of exercise and variations in ambient pressure and altitude confirm this vulnerability. The resulting lung injury takes the form of noncardiogenic pulmonary oedema.

Transfusion-related acute lung injury in multiple traumatized patients
Background: Many of the multiple traumatized patients who refer to the hospital need transfusion. Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) is a serious clinical syndrome associated with the transfusion of plasma-containing blood components. In the article, we present a case of TRALI following transfusion of packed red blood cells Case Presentation: A 24 year old male referred to Shahid Beh...
متن کاملKnowledge, Attitude and Practices Regarding Extreme Environments and Cold Adaptation at Extreme Altitudes on the Himalayan Ranges
Introduction: Extreme-altitudes (5500 m/18045 ft and higher) pose environmental, psychophysiological, infrastructural, logistic, and ergonomic challenges that question explorer’s adaptability and mission-efficiency due to isolation, monotony, intimidating environment and terse health conditions. The assessment of an explorer’s comprehensive adaptability in extreme-altitudes is ...
متن کاملNumerical modeling of primary thoracic trauma because of blast
Purpose: Since explosive blasts continue to cause casualties in both civil and military environments, there is a need for an understanding of the mechanisms of blast trauma at the human organ level, plus a more detailed predictive methodology. The primary goal of this research was to develop a finite element model capable of predicting primary blast injury to the lung so as to assist in the d...
متن کاملProtective effect of S-nitrosoglutathione pretreatment on acute lung injury in septic rats
Objective(s): To investigate the protective effect of S-nitrosoglutathione (SNG) pretreatment on acute lung injury (ALI) in septic rats. Materials and Methods: We constructed a rat model of sepsis by cecal ligation and perforation (CLP), and randomly divided into Sham, CLP, and CLP+SNG (0.25 and 0.5 mg/kg) groups. We used H&E; staining an...
متن کاملDoes gallic acid improve cardiac function by attenuation of oxidative stress and inflammation in an elastase-induced lung injury?
Objective(s): Cardiovascular disease has an important role in mortality caused by lung injury. Emphysema is associated with impaired pulmonary gas exchange efficiency and airflow limitation associated with small airway inflammation. The aim was to evaluate the interactions between lung injury, inflammation, and cardiovascular disease. Since gallic acid has antioxidant ...
